Technology is a great field for autistic minds who excel with coding/data and visual/spatial reasoning. Here are some Autly friendly paths one could consider
Engineering
If you like math and designing things, Engineering is a great field for the autistic mind. The most cutting edge technology can be found in this field including GPS and GIS. There are many types of engineers from commercial design to aerospace, and many different types of companies to work for from NASA to Google. Pay depends on the field you are in and the experience you have; however, most 1st year engineers average well over $50,000 a year.
Video Gaming
When Satoshi Tajiri, diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, first introduced his Pokemon concept to Nintendo, they had a hard time seeing Pokemon as the most fabulous idea ever. They gave it a chance, and boom was there a success. Tajiri’s special interests were bugs and video games, and he combined them both into the successful Pokemon products.
If you have an interest in video games, this may be the career for you. Positions in Video Gaming include Programming Engineers, Sound Engineers, Producers, Animators, Artists, Designers, Musicians, Composers, and Testers. Pay for most of these positions in the first year average over $40,000 a year, but Engineers generally are the highest paid positions of them all.
Instrumentation and Electronics
Visual, mechanical autistic minds can develop their skills in Instrumentation and Electronics. This career field works with motors and anything that requires electricity to function. It requires an intensive attention to detail and the ability to visualize what you see on paper and apply it to an object in front of you. Also, you get to play with some fun gadgets like an oscilloscope, multi-meters, and HMI’s (Human Machine Interface). First year I & E’s make on average $35,000 a year.
