Careers in Computer Support

There are several different types of computer support positions that you can consider. Like any job each one will have its benefits and its weaknesses. It is your job to evaluate them, and carefully take all elements of these positions into account before making a decision that will impact your life. It’s very important that you pick the one that you would be best suited for, as your performance in any of these positions can impact your earning potential.

One type of support job is called Help Desk. Help desk is a position where you sit in an office or cubicle and field calls from people who are having problems with their computer or peripherals. There generally is a specific conduct that you need to use when speaking to customers or clients and sometimes that can be a challenging task when they are upset or frustrated. Often times you make need to take calls where you will assist someone with a very basic problem such as a cable unplugged or an errant button press, these calls may seem easy to you but sometimes even basic troubleshooting can be difficult to explain to someone.

Another type of tech is a person who physically works on computers. This could be onsite, in someone’s home or business, as well as location or on a line in a company with other techs. This job can be a little more physically demanding than the other one, it may require you to do lots of lifting of computers as well as standing for long periods of time. You may need to speak with customers who will describe their issues for you to resolve. Sometimes you may find hardware or software that is broken through no fault of the customer or issues that are clear to see were by mishandling or an accident from the customer.
